FBI says insider trading is working with encrypted app

The sharing of sensitive information has been at the root of many of the scandals facing the financial services industry recently, for example the LIBOR and FX rigging episodes. However, the US’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has now marked Wall Street traders as a potential area of focus, given the use of encrypted apps to hide illicit communications.

According to reports emerging in the Financial Times, the FBI is becoming increasingly concerned that Wall Street traders have found a way to turn encryption to their advantage when it comes to illegally exchanging insider information.

US group asks ban on sale of smartphones to under 13

To bar kids from being addicted to the smartphones, a group in the US state of Colorado has sought ban on sale of the device to those below the age of 13.

Tim Farnum, founder of the non-profit group Parents Against Underage Smartphones, or PAUS, is leading the charge on a proposed ballot initiative in Colorado that would be the first of its kind in the country, the USA Today reported on Monday. With around 80 percent of Americans now owning a device, the number of under 13s that have their own handset is also on the rise.

EU closed roaming costs era, except in Switzerland

Mobile phone users in Europe will soon be free to use their regular call, text and internet allowances anywhere within the EU at no extra cost under new rules which abolish data roaming charges across the union.

As of Thursday June 15, all mobile network operators in Europe will be prohibited from charging additional fees for overseas use within the EU as part of continued efforts by the EU to forge a Digital Single Market across EU member states. It is free to use your phone in European countries as if you were at home. You will still pay your normal monthly or pay as you go bill, but you won’t be charged extra for using your minutes, texts and data when you’re on holiday.

Apple helps to drive safe with Do Not Disturb feature

Apple unveiled a host of new products, updates and software features at its annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) on Monday, and one of them could potentially save lives. The upcoming iOS will include a feature called ‘Do Not Disturb While Driving" that will make it easier to avoid texting while driving. By all indications, it’s rather simple tool from a technological standpoint – but if it works as advertised, iPhone’s ‘Do Not Disturb’ feature could prevent car accidents and traffic fatalities, which is more than enough to make it a worthwhile update.

EU sent a (€110 mln-fine) message to Facebook over WhatsApp takeover

Facebook has been fined €110m by the EU for providing misleading information about its 2014 takeover of WhatsApp. The Commission previously expressed concern that the social media giant had not correctly communicated planned changes to its privacy policy.

The European commission said it had imposed a “proportionate” fine on the technology company to send a clear signal that all firms must comply with EU competition rules.

Apple Pay lands in Italy

Apple Pay is now available in Italy, and iPhone users in the country are able to add eligible credit and debit cards to the Wallet app for use with Apple’s payments service in stores and online.

In Italy, Apple Pay is launching with support for Carrefour bank and UniCredit, as well as Boon prepay. The site says support for additional banks will be added later this year.

Rumors of Apple Pay’s expansion to Italy have been circulating for several weeks as Apple worked to add support for its payments service in the country, and the service has been listed as "Coming Soon" on the Apple Pay Italy site since March.
