China fights pollution issuing Green Bonds

China has dominated global issuance of "green" bonds for two straight years – a trend that will likely continue as the world’s top carbon-emitter tries to play a larger role to contain climate change.

The Asian economic giant burst onto the scene in 2016 to take the crown as the world’s largest issuer of green bonds – a debt instrument with proceeds that are used to finance activities that benefit the environment. China is set to retain its top spot in 2017.

OECD reports sounds alarm bell for Swiss biodiversity

Switzerland’s environment may not be doing as well as perceived, according to the latest report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released, which suggests that the swiss country should do more to address threats to biodiversity.

Altough one of the greenest OECD countries, Switzerland still needs to try to reduce threats to biodiversity and seek more sustainable consumption patterns, as high levels of waste generation and road traffic are putting pressure on the densely populated Central Plateau, according to the OECD’s third environmental performance review of Switzerland.

Gender inequality rises after decade of progress

A decade of slow progress towards better parity between the sexes has screeched to a halt, the World Economic Forum (WEF) said Thursday, warning the global gender gap was now widening. In recent years, women have made significant progress towards equality in a number of areas such as education and health, with the Nordic countries leading the fray.

But the global trend now seems to have made a U-turn, especially in workplaces, where full gender equality is not expected to materialise until 2234, WEF said in a report. "A decade of slow but steady progress on improving parity between the sexes came to a halt in 2017, with the global gender gap widening for the first time since the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report was first published in 2006," it said.

Red Alarm: Carbon dioxide levels hit record in 2016

Concentrations of carbon dioxide surged at a record breaking speed in 2016, according to the annual Greenhouse Gas bulletin compiled by the World Meteorological Organization. The Geneva-based organization said that levels of the heat-trapping gas CO2 in the atmosphere are the highest in in 800,000 years. "The abrupt changes in the atmosphere witnessed in the past 70 years are without precedent," WMO said in a statement.

Swiss oncology company ADC Therapeutics raised $200 million private financing

Just days after Gilead and its new subsidiary Kite won a groundbreaking FDA approval for their CAR-T therapy Yescarta for B-cell lymphomas, Lausanne, ADC Therapeutics (ADCT), an oncology drug discovery and development company that specializes in the development of proprietary Antibody Drug Conjugates (ADCs) targeting major cancers, announced that it has raised $200 million through a private placement. The financing was oversubscribed and supported by both existing and new investors, including Auven Therapeutics, Redmile, the Wild Family Office and AstraZeneca.
