In its third year, the rankings evaluate 80 countries across a range of criteria, from economic influence and power to citizenship and quality of life, to capture how nations are perceived on a global scale.
It is politically impossible for neutral Switzerland to sign in the foreseeable future a new treaty binding it closer to the European Union despite pressure from Brussels, Finance Minister Ueli Maurer said in a newspaper interview.
Maurer told the Neue Zürcher Zeitung newspaper on Friday that he didn’t think a new EU framework treaty was possible soon. “If we try it nonetheless, both sides will be under pressure and this will not lead to good negotiating results,” he said.

In a study Thursday in the journal Science, Johns Hopkins University scientists looked to see how well their experimental test detected cancer in people already known to have the disease. The blood tests found about 70 percent of eight common types of cancer in the 1,005 patients. Switzerland has banned crustacean cruelty, which means no boiling a lobster while it’s alive. On Wednesday the Swiss government announced the ban of boiling live lobsters without stunning them first, swissinfo reported.
By March 1, 2018, the government has ordained Swiss chefs will have to "stun" the crustaceans first before they drop them into the boiling hereafter. “Live crustaceans, including the lobster, may no longer be transported on ice or in ice water. Aquatic species must always be kept in their natural environment. Crustaceans must now be stunned before they are killed,” according to the new Swiss law.
