SSB axes 1440 jobs over 2020

SBB will cut 1,400 jobs over the next four years: the same federal railways have made the announcement in the morning, motivating the measure with the need to reduce costs and increase competitiveness.

By 2020, SBB will decrease the overall costs of 1.2 billion Swiss francs system compared to 2014. The company intends to reduce administrative costs, increase the productivity of railway maintenance, rail and IT exercise, to increase their investment and purchases, using less resources, invest even more in cost-effective solutions, and to simplify organization and processes.

The measures include a cut of 1,400 jobs, mostly in administration and management, but also, the statement said, in traffic management, in sales or in shunting operations, through productivity increases. To cope with the increase in traffic, SBB is also planning to create 200 new posts for the train crew and cleaning. By 2020, the staff will amount to about 32,100. Wherever possible, the jobs will be abolished following the retirements and natural fluctuations of staff.

SSb assures that safety and quality will not be affected.
