BitTorrent creator announces his "Green" Bitcoin

Speaking to technology industry magazine TechCrunch, Bram Cohen said the Chia Network, his long-hinted Bitcoin alternative, could launch by late 2018.

A “very hot” seed investment round has enabled the project to get off the ground and hire that kind of developer skill required to see Cohen’s Chia cryptocurrency sell to investors.

Red Alarm: Carbon dioxide levels hit record in 2016

Concentrations of carbon dioxide surged at a record breaking speed in 2016, according to the annual Greenhouse Gas bulletin compiled by the World Meteorological Organization. The Geneva-based organization said that levels of the heat-trapping gas CO2 in the atmosphere are the highest in in 800,000 years. "The abrupt changes in the atmosphere witnessed in the past 70 years are without precedent," WMO said in a statement.

Dieselgate costs 5,000 deaths more per year

Emissions from diesel cars rigged to appear eco-friendly may be responsible for 5,000 extra deaths from air pollution per year in Europe alone, according to a new study published on Monday.

The numbers are in line with previous assessments of deaths due to the so-called “Dieselgate” scandal, which erupted when carmaker Volkswagen admitted in 2015 to cheating on vehicle emissions tests. The new study, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, focuses on the perils for Europe.

Ecological breakthrough: France will launch green bonds in 2017

France will launch, in 2017, the first round of green bonds that will finance environmental investments. The announcement came a few days ago directly from the Environment and Economy Ministers, Ségolène Royal and Michel Sapin.

The transaction, for "several billion euro" aims to support sustainable investment and was already announced in recent months by Prime Minister François Hollande. It will all be included in the next budget law.
