Switzerland, Hong Kong open dialogue over Fintech

The State Secretariat for International Financial Matters (SIF) under the Swiss Federal Department of Finance and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) launched on Tuesday in Bern a financial dialogue to promote co-operation on financial market issues of common interest. At the margin of the Dialogue, the Swiss Bankers Association (SBA) and the HKMA facilitated an open seminar for the private sector.

Equifax’s problems grow: prosecutors open investigation over stock sales

Federal authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the massive data breach at Equifax, which potentially exposed the personal information of up to 143 million Americans, including their Social Security and driver’s license numbers.

Federal prosecutors are examining the nearly $1.8 million in sales of Equifax stock by Chief Financial Officer John Gamble, Joseph Loughran, president of the credit-reporting giant’s U.S. Information Solutions division, and Rodolfo Ploder, president of the firm’s Workforce Solutions Unit, Bloomberg News reported, citing unidentified people familiar with the investigation.

Warren Buffett became the biggest shareholder of Bank of America

American billionaire Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway group has officially become the top shareholder in Bank of America after exercising its right to buy 700 million shares at a discount.

FBI says insider trading is working with encrypted app

The sharing of sensitive information has been at the root of many of the scandals facing the financial services industry recently, for example the LIBOR and FX rigging episodes. However, the US’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has now marked Wall Street traders as a potential area of focus, given the use of encrypted apps to hide illicit communications.

According to reports emerging in the Financial Times, the FBI is becoming increasingly concerned that Wall Street traders have found a way to turn encryption to their advantage when it comes to illegally exchanging insider information.

HSBC and IBM work together to develop cognitive trade finance tool

IBM and HSBC are developing cognitive intelligence technology that can be used to boost the success of financial services, freeing up staff time and allowing for more innovation.
The solution, which is already in use in Hong Kong and the UAE, uses IBM robotics technology to analyse documents, digitising and extracting the relevant data before feeding it into HSBC’s transaction processing systems.

The lowest VIX since 1993 sends messages to investors

The CBOE Volatility Index .VIX, better known as the VIX and the most widely followed barometer of expected near-term stock market volatility, was down 0.24 points to 9.19, after earlier falling to 9.04, its lowest since December 1993. The VIX has never ended a session under 9 in its history but is on pace to log a close near that level today.

The VIX is derived from the price of S&P 500 Index .SPX options. A low VIX reading typically indicates a bullish outlook for stocks.
